Step-by-step: a fleet
Everything from an empty account to a fleet your users are chatting with, on one page: get a Fleet Account, put a key in your wallet, create the fleet, choose its settings and add your users.
A fleet lets you give other people an AI agent of their own, set up and paid for by you. This guide walks you through every step, from an empty account to a fleet your users are chatting with, and links to the Fleets pages wherever you want more detail. If you have not used Salts before, we recommend creating an agent for yourself first with Step-by-step: a basic agent, so you know what your users will get.
Before you start, you will need the email address of everyone who should get an agent, and a few dollars of credit to pay for their replies. Fleet Accounts are approved by hand, so expect some waiting between the first step and the rest.
1Get a Fleet Account
A Personal Account can only create a limited number of agents, and every agent in a fleet counts towards that limit, so you first need to ask for more.
- On the Salts home page, click Need more agents? below your list of agents.
- Under Request agents, enter how many more agents you need. We recommend counting one for every person you want to give an agent to, plus a few extra for people who join later.
- Click Send request.
Once your request is approved, your limit goes up automatically. Get a Fleet Account explains how to check your limit.
2Put a key in your OpenRouter wallet
If your agents will use your OpenRouter key, so your users do not need their own, you need a key in your wallet before you create the fleet. Click OpenRouter wallet in the top right corner of the home page, and either paste your own key under Already have an OpenRouter key? or click Pay with crypto under Get new key to buy one. Get an OpenRouter API key and Buy a key with crypto walk you through each way.
Every agent in the fleet spends from this one key, so we recommend giving it enough credit for all your users.
3Create the fleet
On the home page, click Create a new agent.
- Under Name, enter the name every agent starts with, for example "Team assistant". Each user can rename their own agent later.
- Check Create a fleet of agents.
- Under Fleet name, enter a name for the whole fleet, such as your team or company name. Your users will see this name on their agent.
- Under User emails, enter the email address of every user, separated by spaces. The line under the box shows how many agents will be created.
- Click Next.
Create a fleet covers this step in more detail.
4Choose the settings
The next step is Admin settings. These are the settings every agent in the fleet starts with, and each one has a lock. Unlocked settings can be changed by your users on their own agent, while locked settings are hidden from them. At the very least, we recommend that you:
- Choose your key under OpenRouter, and lock it if you do not want users to replace it with their own.
- Set a Monthly spend limit under Limits, so no single agent can run up a large bill.
Everything else can stay as it is for now. Choose the fleet's settings explains every setting and suggests a good starting point.
Click Create. Your fleet shows up in a new Fleets tab on the home page.
5Let your users know
Salts does not send invitation emails, so you will need to tell each user yourself. Ask them to sign in to Salts with the email address you entered for them, and their agent will be waiting on their home page. If the agent uses your key, they can start chatting straight away.
At the top of their agent's sidebar, they will see a line such as This agent is part of "Acme" fleet., with your fleet's name in it. You can see how much each agent spends, but you cannot open their agents or read their conversations. What your users see explains everything else they see, and what to tell them.
You are done
Your fleet is running. To add more users later, click + on your fleet's row in the Fleets tab, enter their email addresses and click Add agents. Manage your fleet explains this, along with changing settings for everyone or for one user and removing agents.
Footnotes
- Users who sign in with a different email address will not see their agent. If that happens, add their correct address from Manage your fleet.
- Saving new fleet settings later overwrites every agent in the fleet, including anything your users changed themselves. We recommend letting your users know before you change fleet settings.
